BACKGROUNDS Parkinson’s disease (PD) and dementia are geriatric diseases whose incidence and prevalence increases with age, but there is a lack of studies analyzing the prevalence of dementia among patients with PD using a national representative data. METHODS In this study, we utilized data from the 2016 Korean aged population sample to identify patients with dementia via ICD-10 code G20 and categorized them into dementia and non-dementia groups. Using a prevalence-based approach, we examined the clinical characteristics, medical expenditures, and medication pattern of Korean PD patients with and without dementia. RESULTS We found that the average annual medical expenditure for PD treatment was KRW 1,880,035, and that PD patients with dementia had 1.1 times higher medical expenditures, mainly due to hospitalization. Patients with dementia had 1.4 times more annual number of days hospitalizations (19 vs 14), but patients without dementia had 2.3 times more outpatient visits (15 vs 34). CONCLUSION These results show that the clinical and financial burden of dementia, a comorbidity of PD, is significant and emphasizes the need for targeted healthcare strategies.
