This study reviews the literature on English for Specific Purposes (ESP) reading, an evolving area within English education. It explores ESP reading’s role across various domains, focusing on its distinctive challenges and opportunities in ESP reading instruction and aiming to provide insights into effective pedagogical practices to improve ESP reading comprehension. The study also addresses challenges faced by ESP reading experts in digital literacy, proposing the integration of traditional discourse and genre analysis with new and innovative digital text analysis techniques. In the context of Korean EFL (English as a Foreign Language) education, ESP endorses the early introduction to Academic English, which significantly enhances the initial stages of language learning. This approach is expected to transform English reading classes into ESP-focused ones that convey specialized domain knowledge. Additionally, the study underscores the necessity of expanding ESP reading research and education through the development of new methods that merge existing and innovative approaches to understand 'invisible discourse.' In the realm of digital literacy, it is essential for readers to be aware of not only visible content but also what is unseen.
