북한은 혈통에 의한 3대 세습으로 체제를 유지하고 있다. 과거 김정일 시대에 누가 후계자가 될 것인지에 대한 학계의 논쟁이 있었다. 당시 학계에서 김정남과 김정철이 유력한 후계자로 거론되었고, 김정은은 후계자로서 주목받지 못했다. 그러나 현재 김정은이 김정일의 뒤를 이어서 북한을 통치하고 있다. 2022년 11월, 김정은이 딸을 공개함으로써 후계자 논쟁이 재연되었다. 재연된 후계자 논쟁은 김정은의 딸 ‘김주애’가 후계자로 내정되었다는 주장으로 시작되었다. 김주애를 둘러싼 연구자들의 논쟁은 제한된 정보와 자료의 부족으로 전개되어 소모적인 성격을 갖고 있다. 따라서 김주애의 등장이 남북한에 주는 의미를 분석하고, 4대 세습과 북한의 미래를 고찰하는 것이 중요하다. 김정은은 4대 세습을 단행할 것이며, 우리는 미래에도 핵으로 무장한 북한과 대치할 가능성이 크다. 그래서 정부는 김정은의 후계자가 핵무기를 물려받지 않도록 대응해야 한다. 또한, 연구과제로 김주애의 등장을 목격한 이후 탈북한 북한이탈주민들을 대상으로 심층 인터뷰에서 확보한 데이터를 바탕으로 4대 세습과 김주애의 등장을 논의할 필요가 있다. 결론적으로 아직 누구나 동의할 정도의 정보와 자료가 입수되지 않은 상황에서 후계자 논쟁은 무의미하다. 현재로서는 특정 인물이 아닌, 4대 세습 그 자체에 의미를 두는 것이 바람직하다.

The discussions among researchers regarding Kim Ju-ae are inherently exhaustive due to limited information and resources. Therefore, it is important to analyze the implications of Kim Ju-ae's emergence for both South and North Korea, and to consider the future of North Korea under a potential fourth-generation succession. It is likely that Kim Jong-un will implement a fourth-generation succession, and we may continue to face a nuclear-armed North Korea in the future. Thus, the (south korea)government should take action to prevent Kim Jong-un's successor from inheriting nuclear weapons. Additionally, for a research project, it is necessary to discuss the fourth-generation succession and the emergence of Kim Ju-ae based on data obtained from in-depth interviews with North Korean refugees who witnessed her emergence. In conclusion, in the absence of widely accepted information and data, the succession debate is meaningless. At present, it is advisable to focus on the significance of the fourth-generation succession itself, rather than on a specific individual.
