As time goes by, people's requirements for space are getting higher and higher. In particular, we hope that public spaces in cities can take more needs into consideration when meeting basic functions. This study aims to summarize the definition and description of space in the book “Genius Loci: Towards a Phenomenology of Architecture” by Christian Norberg- Schulz, and analyze it with examples of Alvar Aalto's public space design. The results of this study are as follows:. In the new design, the design should be in line with the spirit and struc- ture of the place on the basis of respecting the original space, so as to achieve the compatible and harmonious form of the new and old buildings; in the process of architectural design, the geographical location and cultural environment of the building location must be considered. Only in this way can we design an excellent public space that meets needs; finally, the design must consider people's embodied feelings in the space and enhance users' sense of identity and belonging to the building.
