Conceptualization of Student Well-Being for Indonesian Schools: a Public Value Perspective

Purpose: Well-being of students has increasingly become a very important factor of education. The conceptualization of student well-being is a crucial aspect of the creation of a conducive and safe environment for students in schools. This article aims to explore the scope of well-being in education, highlighting its impact on academic achievement, physical and mental health, and overall comfort within educational institutions. Drawing on various studies and research, the paper emphasizes the need for a specific conceptualization of student well-being. Method: This work used a qualitative approach by means of literature review and document analysis. The literature review consists of analysis of various available online resources on student well-being in Indonesia. Document analysis was conducted by assessing various government policy related to student well-being. Result: The findings underscore the global trend of prioritizing student well-being across educational levels and the significance of integrating well-being concepts into educational policies and practices in Indonesia. Student well-being, that includes physical health, emotional stability, social relationships, academic engagement, environmental supports, and spiritual maturity, needs serious attention from schools to provide better support for students in their holistic development. Student well-being has become a public value that all school stakeholders need to support. Conclusion: Student well-being is an essential part of students’ achievement and overall success at school. Conceptualization of well-being at school comprehends the multidimensional nature of well-being, including physical, emotional, social, academic, cognitive, and spiritual aspects, schools can better cater to the holistic needs of students. The inclusion of student well-being in Indonesia’s educational policies is imperative. In the continuously disruptive world, school should become a place where students are able to not only nurture their physical development, cognitive ability and various skills, but also a place where they feel secure, comfortable and happy
