The Impact of Corpus-Based Vocabulary Learning on CSAT English Reading Performance

As the College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT) is important for students in Korea, this study attempts to find ways to get a high score on the CSAT English reading section by focusing on vocabulary learning methods using a corpus. Based on the analysis of students from one of the specialized high schools in Seoul, this study shows a significant correlation between the number of words a student knows in the passage and whether the student gets the correct answer. This study also suggests that a student should know at least 80% of the words in the passage to answer the questions correctly, confirming the importance of vocabulary learning in preparing for the CSAT. As for vocabulary learning methods, this study finds that corpus-based vocabulary learning contributes to better performance on the CSAT English reading section when comparing pretest and posttest scores. This is because students could learn not only the meaning of the vocabulary but also more information such as frequency and the context in which the vocabulary is used. Learners who experienced corpus-based vocabulary learning also reported that they were able to retain the meaning of vocabulary words for longer periods of time and use them properly to interpret vocabulary in sentences.
