사토일기(1880∼1881)로 보는 사토와 이동인의 접촉 행적에 관한 연구

A Study on the Contact between Satow and Lee Dong-in through the Satow's Diaries (1880~1881)

본 연구는 조선이 개항한 후 1880년 일본으로 건너간 개화승 이동인이 영국공사관을 찾아가 어니스트 사토를 만나 비밀리에 외교활동을 한 행적을 사토문서를 통해 살펴보고, 영국의 대조선 외교정책의 변화를 고찰하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 이동인은 일본의 유력한 인사들과 교류와 더불어 사토의 조선어 개인교습과 함께 비밀정보원 임무를 수행하며 국제정세를 파악하고 만국공법의 질서를 익혔다. 이동인과 사토가 접촉한 내용들은 영국 외무부에 보고되어 영국의 대조선 정책에 영향을 가져왔다. 이동인의 실종에 관한 연구는 주로 조선에서 반대파의 보복으로 인해 사망하였을 것으로 추정하였으나, 급박한 사정으로 인해 일본으로 도피했을 가능성도 사토일기를 비롯한 일본외교문서 및 조선사절의 일기를 통해서 유추해 볼 수도 있다. 사토의 기록들은 19세기 말 극동의 정세와 영국의 대조선 정책을 찾아볼 수 있는 텍스트로 사료적 가치가 매우 크다고 할 것이다,

Through the Satow's Papers, this study aims to examine the secret diplomatic contacts of Lee Dong-in, who traveled to Japan in 1880 after the opening of Joseon and met Ernest Satow at the British Consulate. In addition to interacting with influential Japanese figures, Lee taught Satow the Korean language. In his role as Satow's secret informant, Lee learned about international affairs and the order of the Universal Public Law. Lee's contacts with Satow were reported to the British Foreign Office and influenced British policy toward Korea. While studies of Lee's disappearance have largely assumed that he died as a result of reprisals from opponents in Joseon, it is also possible that he fled to Japan due to urgent circumstances, which can be surmised from Japanese diplomatic documents, including Satow's diary, and the diaries of Korean envoys. Satow's records are of great historical value as texts that shed light on the situation in the Far East and British policy toward Korea in the late 19th century.
