This paper examines the level of industrial and geographic diversification of liner and tramp companies taking into account the special characteristics of the shipping industry. The paper found that the industrial diversification index of liner companies or tramp companies was not very high. By the fact that SR is 0.7 for liner companies and 0.6 for tramp companies, it can be assumed that liner companies are diversifying into leading product types and tramp companies are into related product types. Geographic diversification was more common among liner companies. Another important finding as a characteristic of geographic diversification is that there is no company, whether a liner company or a tramp company, that does not utilize the secondary shipping registry system. The paper contributes to provide preliminary research on the diversification of shipping companies.
