As the significance of ESG management continues to grow, ports are increasingly adopting ESG practices. With competition among ports becoming more intense, it is essential to complement traditional methods of securing competitiveness with stronger policy support, extensive collaboration with shipping companies, and the creation of an optimal port business environment. This underscores the impact of the strategic direction set by port authorities on a port's competitiveness. Leveraging ESG initiatives, port authorities can chart a course towards sustainable and environmentally conscious port operations. Chinese ports are actively embracing ESG management in alignment with this global trend, potentially enhancing port competitiveness. The main purpose of this study is to ascertain the potential influence of implementing ESG management strategies on enhancing the competitiveness of Chinese ports. To achieve this objective, the study investigates the trends in ESG adoption among both Chinese and international ports and conducts a comprehensive review of existing literature to identify key ESG management variables. These variables are categorized, and their significance in relation to port competitiveness is assessed through AHP analysis. Based on the analysis results, the study presents implications for the use of ESG in ports from the perspective of securing competitiveness.
