Reciprocal Relationships Concerning a Father's Participation in Child Rearing, a Mother's Satisfaction with Marriage, and a Father's Satisfaction with Marriage

Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the reciprocal relationships concerning a father's participation in child rearing, a mother's satisfaction with marriage, and a father's satisfaction with marriage. Methods: The longitudinal data for three years, collected from the Panel Study on Korean Children, was analyzed with an Autoregressive Cross-Legged Model. Three variables were measured by means of a self-report method. Results: The results confirmed that there were reciprocal relationships between a father’s participation in child rearing and a mother’s satisfaction with marriage. Also, there were reciprocal relationships between both parents’ satisfaction with marriage. This means that a father's participation in child rearing positively affected a mother's satisfaction with marriage. Also, a father's participation in child rearing would have a positive impact on a marital relationship. However, the father's participation in child rearing and the father's satisfaction with marriage had no effect on each other. Conclusion: A social atmosphere should be promoted in which fathers can actively participate in child rearing so that their satisfaction with marriage can also improve.
