Structural Model on the Effects of Consumption Behavior on Adolescent: Focused on Family Characteristics and Self-control

Objective: This study aimed to find out the mediating effect of self - control on family communication, a mother's consumption behavior and adolescents’ consumption behavior. Methods: A total of 383 students attending high schools across the country were analyzed. For data analysis, the SPSS 20 and AMOS 23 programs were used to perform structural equation model analysis, and bootstrap analysis was performed to verify the mediating effect. Results: The results are as follows. First, among the family characteristics, communication between families affects self-control and adolescents' consumption behaviors. It was also found that the consumption behavior of mothers had an effect on self-control and consumption behavior of adolescent children. Self-control showed a significant static effect on the consumption behavior of adolescents. Second, communication between families was found to have a significant indirect effect on adolescents' consumption behaviors through the mediation of self-control. Conclusion: Positive communication between family members and healthy consumption behavior by mothers influenced the selfcontrol of adolescent children, and communication between families had a significant effect on healthy consumption behaviors of adolescent children through mediation of self-control.
