The effects of Family Violence Experiences of University Students on Fear of Intimacy: The Moderated Mediating Effect of Traumatized Self-System by Post-Traumatic Growth

Objective: This research aims to verify the moderated mediating effect of post-traumatic growth on the relationship between family violence experiences and fear of intimacy through traumatized self-system of university students. Methods: The research subjects were 363 university students (male: 118[32.5%], female: 245[67.5%], M = 21.34[SD = 2.23]). The participants completed self-report questionnaires. Data were analyzed for moderated mediating effects between variables using PROCESS macro 3.0 model 1, 4, 14 methods. Results: First, the fully mediating effect of traumatized self-system on the process of family violence experiences affected the fear of intimacy. Second, as to the effects of traumatized self-system on fear of intimacy, the adjustment effect was varied according to the level of post-traumatic growth. Third, the moderated mediating effect of post-traumatic growth was verified. Namely, the mediating effect of traumatized self-system was moderated by post-traumatic growth in the relation between family violence experiences and fear of intimacy. Conclusions: The results of this study provide data for the development of intervention programs to improve the intimacy of university students.
