The Effect of the Degree of Symptoms of Dementia on the Burden of Family Caregivers The Moderating Role of Informal and Formal Support

Objectives: The study examines the effect of two symptoms elderly with dementia, problem behaviors and activities of daily living(ADL) and verifies the moderating effect of informal and formal support. Methods: Among dementia family caregivers in Daejeon and Sejong, 182 children, grandchildren, or others, who have supported the elderly with dementia for at least three months were selected. Then, the moderating effect was verified through hierarchical regression analysis. Results: As a result of verifying the moderating effect of informal and formal support on the burden of the caregivers, among formal support, short-term care services eased the burden of support while home-living care services increased the burden, and informal support did not show a significant effect. Conclusions: Based on the research results, the study suggests improvement in the utilization of short-term care services during formal support, improvement in contents of home-living care services for elderly, the need for customized systematic social welfare interventions considering the characteristics of the caregivers of dementia patients, and the necessity of dementia-related education for the caregivers including potential caregivers.
