The purpose of this study was to explore the distinct characteristics of communication and relationships between daughters in college and mothers in divorced families from the daughter’s perspective. In-depth interviews were used for qualitative research. Research participants included three females college students whose mothers either did not remarry(or live with) someone, lived with someone but were unstable, or lived with someone and were stable. According to the data analysis, the daughters all held groundless incorrect beliefs about their mothers. Those beliefs consisted of ‘I cannot show or express that I am exhausted,’ ‘Mom only needs us, she doesn't need another man,’ ‘A daughter needs to be able to alleviate her mother’s loneliness.’ However, daughters also mentioned that their mothers all held incorrect beliefs about them. Those beliefs included the ideas that ‘My daughter will not think of me as a burden when I rely on her because I don’t have a husband,’ and ‘My daughter comes home late or spends the night elsewhere because I didn't raise her right without her father.’ Based on such research results, counseling guidelines were provided to promote more effective communication and closer ties between mothers and daughters in divorced families.
