Family friendly community policy has received relatively little academic attention compared to family friendly workplace policy. In order to facilitate academic research and practical implementation, this study suggests a conceptualization of family friendly community from the perspective of family policy. A review of previous research in relevant academic fields helps clarify the scope of community and theoretical components of family friendly community. A family friendly community consists of both a physical and social environment. The physical environment has two components; urban planning and care-related infrastructure. The social environment has two components; community population compositions and social relations among residents. The physical and social environments interact with each other. Previous studies tend to pay more attention to the physical aspects, leaving a gap in the social aspects of family friendly community. This study has three implications. First, the boundaries and specific aspects of family friendly community should be clearly defined. Second, both subjective and objective evaluation measures complement each other. Lastly, future research on family friendly community needs to be expanded in terms of subjects and outcomes.
