The Effects of Driving Ability and Mobility Impact on the Driving Risks of Elderly Drivers

This research aims to reduce the risk of accidents while driving by investigating the factors that affect traffic accidents caused by the elderly. Subject were 271 elderly driver whose ages 60 over. The statistics used for data analysis were reliability, frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, one way ANOVA and multiple regression. The results of this study were as follows; 1) The degrees of elderly's driving ability was 3.24 and driving risk was 3.53, those data showed higher than median. While driving mobility was 2.89, the data showed lower than median. 2) The elderly's driving ability level significantly according to driving career, age, emotional state, spouse. And driving mobility level were associated with age, sex, driving career. Also the driving risk level were significantly according to emotional state, sex, age, driving career. 3) There was a positive correlation between driving ability, mobility, traffic accident risk level. 4) The variables that affect the elderly's driving risks were driving ability, driving mobility, emotional state, which explained about 28% of the total variance. This results provides the basic data needed for traffic safety education in accordance with the driving characteristics drivers.
