고려의 인물, 徐熙의 ‘將軍’ 호칭에 대한 再論

A reconsideration of the title ‘General’ by Seo Hee, a figure from Goryeo

초, 중등 교과서와 한국의 위인 100인에 포함된 서희(徐熙, 942~998)는 탁월한 지혜와 용기있는 결단력으로 외적의 침략으로부터 나라를 구한 겨레의 스승이며, 우리 역사상 그 짝을 찾아보기 힘든 뛰어난 전략가요, 자주정신에 투철한 외교관이었다. 현재 한국전쟁 후 제1차 교육과정기(1954~1963) 초등학교 사회생활6-1 교과서에서 서희를 ‘장군’으로 서술된 이후, 1977년 여주시 산북면 소재지 서희의 묘소가 ‘서희 장군 묘’로 경기도 기념물로 지정 등록되었다. 서희 서거 1,000주기(1999년) 추모학술대회 때 부터 계속 전공 연구자들에 의하여 ‘장군’이라는 무관 명칭이 부적합하다고 여러번 지적되었고, 전직 대통령 및 외교부에서도 문관으로, 문화체육관광부에서도 ‘장위공 서희상’의 표준영정으로 지정 공시되었음에도 불구하고 아직 올바르게 명칭 변경이 되지 않고 있다. 또한 자치단체에서 각기 다른 명칭으로 혼용되고 있어 통일되지 않은 문제점을 가지고 있다. 현재 일반적으로 사전적 의미의 ‘將軍’이란 명칭은 一軍을 통솔 지휘하는 武官, 大將이라 하였으며, 영어의 ‘general’은 장성급 장교(將星級 將校)로, 군대를 지휘, 통솔하는 우두머리의 장교 계급으로 표현되고 있다. 더구나 고려 때 장군은 중앙군의 3번째 서열의 신분이다. 이러한 뜻을 가진 ‘장군’이란 용어를 문관인 서희에게 ‘서희 장군’이란 명칭으로 쓰인다는 것은 그의 행적과 삶의 궤적에서 올바른 호칭은 되지 않는다. 학계나 문중에서 지속적인 명칭 변경의 요구에도 불구하고 아직까지 합당한 명칭을 제시하지 못한 것은 학계나 문중만의 잘못은 아닐 것이다. 우리 모두의 무의식에서 비롯한 것이다. 따라서 현재의 경기도 기념물의 명칭인 “서희 장군 묘”를 변경하여 “여주 장위공 서희 묘역”으로 변경되어야 할 것이다.

Seo Hee(徐熙, 942-998), included in elementary and middle school textbooks and among the 100 greatest people of Korea, was a teacher of the people who saved the country from invasion by foreign enemies with excellent wisdom and courageous determ ination, and is a m an whose equal is hard to find in our history. He was an outstanding strategist and diplomat with a strong spirit of independence. Currently, after Seo Hee was described as a 'general' in the elementary school Social Life 6-1 textbook during the first curriculum period after the Korean War(1954-1963), in 1977, Seo Hee's grave in Sanbuk-myeon, Yeoju-si was renamed 'General Seo Hee's Tomb'. It was designated and registered as a Gyeonggi-do monument. Since the memorial conference held on the 1,000th anniversary of Seo Hee's death(1999), major researchers have repeatedly pointed out that the military title 'General' is inappropriate, and the former president and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as a civil servant, and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, have called it 'Jang Wigong Seo Hee-sang'. Even though it has been designated and announced as a standard portrait, the name has not yet been changed correctly. In addition, there is a problem of unification as different names are used interchangeably in local governments. Currently, the term 'general' in the general dictionary meaning refers to a military officer (military officer) or general(大將) who commands and commands an army, and 'general' in English means a general-level officer(將星級 將校). It is expressed as the rank of a head officer who com m ands and commands the army. Moreover, during the Goryeo Dynasty, a general was the third highest rank in the central army. Using the term ‘general’ with this meaning as ‘General Seohee’ for Seohee, a civil servant, is not the correct title given the trajectory of his actions and life. It is probably not the fault of the academic world or the family alone that they have not yet been able to come up with a suitable name despite constant requests for a nam e change. It originates from the unconsciousness of all of us. Therefore, the name of the current Gyeonggi-do monument, “General Seo Hee’s Tomb,” should be changed to “Yeoju Jangwigong Seo Hee’s Cemetery.”
