An Empirical Study on the Marital Adjustment of Remarried Korean Husbands in Multicultural Families: Focused on Coping Behaviors

The purpose of this study was to investigate the coping behaviors of remarried Korean husbands in multicultural families. For the purpose of this study, 6 Korean men who had remarried immigrant women from foreign countries(China, The Philippines, Vietnam, Uzbekistan) were interviewed and the data collected was analyzed by means of qualitative method. The results showed that the coping behaviors of remarried Korean husbands were categorized as follows: Firstly, in problem-focused coping Korean husbands adjusted to marital life through childbirth, cultural learning and teaching, financial responsibility, the sharing of housework and a couple-centered life, supporting the wife in her education and work and making an effort to look younger. Secondly, emotion-focused coping included having religious beliefs and a sense of marital responsibility, having empathy and having trust in the wife. Thirdly, in meaning- focused coping there were a positive view of remarriage and a favorable perception of the wife's nationality and remarriage had a meaning of embracing family-centered life. Finally, for social coping, Korean husbands accessed services in multicultural family support center and received support from self-help groups, and sought advices from reliable marriage agencies. These coping behaviors by remarried Korean husbands could contribute to the development of stable and strong remarried multicultural families.
