Research Trends on Couples' Personalities

This study searched for researches on couples' personalities spanning a period of 19 years, from 1995 to 2013, in Korea. A total of 49 master's and doctor's dissertations and journal articles in Korea investigating couples' personalities were selected and analyzed. By grasping how the researches on couples' personalities have been conducted in terms of prevention and treatment, the purpose of the study was to improve marital satisfaction, to promote happy marriages, to seek practical solutions to conflicts, and to educate about divorce prevention. Also, the study’s aim was to present base data that are needed for researchers of couples and the field of marital counseling and family coaching. The method of analysis was content analysis, which was typically conducted in literature research. The main results of this study are as follows. First, the studies of couples' personalities in terms of prevention have been conducted based on the Enneagram personality theory, the communication theory and positive psychology. Second, the studies on couples' personalities in terms of treatment have been conducted based on the conflict theory, MBTI and Big Five Model.
