The Effects of the Parental and Marital Relationships on the Father-Child Relationship

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of the parental and marital relationships onthe father-child relationship. The subjects of this study consisted of 530 fathers who live inChungbuk province. The test of the model was conducted with path analysis using the AMOS 7.0program. The results of this research are summarized as follows. First, the father's affectionaterelationship with his son and daughter was only affected by a positive relationship with his ownfather whereas a negative relationship with his own father had a direct effect only on a rejectingrelationship with his son. Second, the father's affectionate or rejecting relationship with his son anddaughter was only affected by a negative relationship with his own mother whereas a positiverelationship with his own mother had no direct effect on the father-child relationship. Third, thefather's marital relationship was affected by a positive relationship with his own parents. Fourth,the marital relationship had direct and indirect effects on the father's affectionate or rejectingrelationship as a result of his positive or negative relationship with his own parents. The resultsindicated that the father's positive relationship with his own parents and marital relationship arestrong predictors on the father-child relationship.
