The purpose of this cross-cultural study is to investigate the effects of the perception of parental role responsibilities on parenting style. The subjects of this study are 79 international parents, 40 Korean-American parents living in the United States, and 36 Korean parents living in Korea who have children under 18 years of age(a total of 155 subjects). The results are as follows. First, all three parent groups have a significant correlation with the perception of parental role responsibilities to the authoritative parenting style and the authoritarian parenting style. Second, in the case of international parents, the sub-factors of the relationship between the child and the social institution and that between the child and the family explain the authoritarian parenting style. A sub-factor of physical health explains the authoritative parenting style. In the case of Korean-American parents, the sub-factor of material(food/clothing/shelter) explains the authoritarian parenting style. The sub-factors of material and child care explain the permissive parenting style. A sub-factor of cognitive development explains the authoritative parenting style. In the case of Korean parents, the sub-factors of child care and survival skills explain the authoritarian parenting style. A sub-factor of survival skills explains the permissive parenting style. Finally, the sub-factors of norms and social values explain the authoritative parenting style.
