The Influence of Social Network Intimacy on the Empowerment of Married Immigrant Women: Focused on the Mediating Effect of Social Support Functions

The purpose of this study is to examine the role of social network intimacy and social functions in enhancing empowerment among married immigrant women. One hundred fifty married immigrant women residing in Gyeonggi province and Seoul were surveyed. There are three research questions. The first question is to find out whether social network intimacy influences the empowerment of married immigrant women. The second question analyzes whether social support functions have an effect on the empowerment of married immigrant women. The third question is to find out whether social support mediates the relationship between social network intimacy and the empowerment of married immigrant women. Multiple regression analysis and Sobel test are used to analyze the study questions. The findings reveal that social network intimacy influences the empowerment of married immigrant women. Social support functions also have a positive association with empowerment, and social support functions have a mediating effect on the relationship between social network intimacy and empowerment. Based on the findings, the contribution of this study and implications for policy and practice for married women’s empowerment are discussed.
