The Effect of Parenting Behavior on Adolescents' Life Satisfaction: The Mediating Effect of Ego-Identity and School Adjustment

The aims of this study were to investigate the effect of parenting behaviors on adolescents’ life satisfaction and to explore the mediating effects of ego-identity and school adjustment on the above relations. The subjects were third-year middle school students and the data was from the third year data of The 2010 Korea Children and Youth Panel Survey (2010KCYPS). Structural equational models were conducted with Amos 21.0. The major findings are as follows: 1) parenting behavior had negative impacts on adolescents' life satisfaction; 2) ego-identity, but not school adjustment, mediated between parenting behavior and adolescents’ life satisfaction; and 3) there were significant differences between boys and girls regarding the relation between parenting behavior and adolescents’ life satisfaction. The findings of this study suggest that interventions dealing with ego-identity are important for improving adolescents’ life satisfaction and gender should be considered to understand their life satisfaction.
