The purpose of this study is to examine the awareness of the discipline and abuse of preschool parents. The study aims to present a method to understand in-depth studies on the discipline associated with abuse from a comprehensive study on child abuse through many examples and realities of child abuse that have been studied for a long time. With the cooperation of Changwon City’s nurseries and kindergartens, we collected 1,105 valid answers out of 2,000 questionnaire sheets. The results were evaluated by 752 mothers and 350 fathers. The results were as follows: 1. The most common parental behavior of discipline was scolding. 2. 90 percent of mothers recognized hitting the face, not feeding and 10 more acts as abusive behaviors. Fathers identified hitting the face, kicking the legs and 12 more behaviors as abusive acts. Half of the parents agreed that scolding and spanking are permissible. 3. Experienced parents treated each behavior as discipline compared to unexperienced parents, who tended to consider the behaviors as abuse. 4. A study of parents’ demographic characteristics and results related to the recognition of abuse shows that parents who are younger, have higher education, have less number of children, and have more skillful jobs tended to consider the behaviors as abuse more than other parents.
