The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of the marital stability of mothers on the sociability and academic performance of their children by conducting a relational analysis and a path analysis for the variables. The results were compared between children in multicultural and non-multicultural families. The objects of this study were 583 mother-child pairs (271 mother-child pairs in multicultural families, 312 mother-child pairs in non-multicultural families). The data were analyzed using structural equation model designating the mother's marital stability as a predictor of the child's sociability and academic performance. The results were as follows. First, the level of the mother’s marital stability, and the levels of the child’s sociability and academic performance in multicultural families were lower than those in non-multicultural families. Second, the mother’s marital stability was a predictor of the child’s sociability in multicultural families. The child’s sociability also mediated between the mother’s marital stability and the child’s academic performance. According to the results of the study, measures for developing programs enhancing the mother’s marital stability and the child’s sociability in multicultural families were suggested.
