A Qualitative Case Study on the Divorce Related Experiences of Disabled Women

This qualitative study investigates the divorce experiences of disabled women to understand themeaning of divorce from their perspectives. In-depth interviews were conducted with 11 disabledwomen from the Korean Disabled Women Unit who are divorced. A qualitative case study methodwas used for data interpretation. It ensures that the divorce experiences of disabled women areexplored within its contexts through a variety of lenses. The dominant themes are related with theparticipants' major reasons for divorcing, their experiences of the divorce process, and the meaningof divorce to them. Several implications were discussed to increase marital stability as follows: theimplementation of a couple relationship enhancement program, the construction of community-basedsupport systems such as centers for the prevention and treatment of domestic violence, legalassistance from non-profit organizations with the divorce process, therapeutic intervention thatcould support personal growth and healing, and financial support programs.
