A Theoretical Review on the Studiesof Father - Son Relationships

This study theoretically reviews the studies on father-son relationship and reveals several points concerning their relationships. First, it urges more study on the relationship because little work has been done in this area compared to relationships even though the relationship is critical, particularly to the Korean family. Second, the review shows that three approaches have been taken to father-son relationships: in terms of roles, in terms of interaction and in terms of the socio-cultural context. Third, the review indicates that additional studies are needed to expand to the interaction and socio-cultural aspects in addition to the developmental aspects, which have formed the mainstream of recent studies. Finally, father-son relationship studies reveal that the relationship tends to change according to the developmental stages of sons. As far as the relationship is applied to the entire course of life, we believe that future studies should explore the other stages of the life cycle that extend beyond the stages of childhood and adolescence.
