Study of Child Rearing Practice and Socialization in Traditional Families

The purpose of this documentary study was to investigate child rearing practice and socialization in the Choson Dynasty and to explore those implications in applying to parent education in modem times. The Confucian view of human beings, ideal man and child education was reviewed. The aim of socialization was to be Kun-Ja as a ideal man in the Confusian view. It was found that child rearing pratices in the Choson Dynasty was to emphasize prenatal education and close physical contact between mother and infant which gave emotional security of infant and strong mother/infant bond. Discipline was begun at about three years, but it was not severe. Socialization in childhood was largely concerned with mental attitude and right conduct on dairy life. It was emphasized to stand for congruence of knowledge and behavior. Thus, the methods of child education in traditional families was so valuable that is applicable to contemporary parent education program.
