A Study on Children's Creativity, Self-esteem, and Maternal Child Rearing Behaviors in Urban and Rural Communities

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships of children's creativity to their self-esteem and maternal child rearing in urban and rural communities. Subjects were 435 boys and girls enrolled in grade 4, 5, 6 and their mothers from five public elementary schools in Chonan City and Naju City. The instruments for the study were Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking-Figural (TTCT-F), Coopersmith's Self Esteem Inventory, Korean Maternal Behavior Inventory and questionnaire on home environmental variables. The data were analyzed by Pearson's r and t-test and Cronbach α for reliability. The major findings were as follows: 1. Children's creativity of urban community was significantly higher than that of rural community. 2. There were positive correlations between 'elaboration' and 'premature closure' of children's creativity and children's self-esteem in urban community and between 'originality' of children's creativity and children's self-esteem in rural community. 3. There were positive correlations between children's creativity and 'Achievement' and 'Reasoning Guidance' of maternal child rearing in urban community and between children's creativity and 'Reasoning Guidance', 'Overprotection' and 'Love' of maternal child rearing in rural community.
