A Review on the Harmfulness of Violent Media on Youths

This study is a review on the empirical reseach proving. that violent media provocates behavioral changes in terms of mind and action. Based upon data-gathering methodology, experiment, quasi-experiment, and correlational studies are divided and summarized. The conclusion from the review of experimental studies is that viewing of violent media enhances the viewer's violent motivation. Even though violent scenes result in severe cruel crimes in actual settings. The review of quasi-experimental studies is that viewing the violent scene itself does not affect youths'aggression, but it has aggressive youths become more aggressive. In contrast, the review of correlational studies is summarized that viewing of violent scenes and commiting of violent actions are in bi-directional causal relationship. The bi-directional causal relationship means that viewing of violent scenes cause aggressive behaviors, on the one hand and aggressive youths relative to non-aggersive youths have a tendency to prefer violent scenes, on the other hand. In conclusion, regardless of research methodology it is supported that viewing of violent has a tendency to increase youth's aggressive behavior. At least, no study supports the cathasis effect of violent scenes.
