Mother's Perceptions and Needs of After-School Child Care and Education Program

The purpose of this study is to investigate the mother's perceptions and needs of after-school child care and education program. The subjects were 699 mothers of the first and second graders selected from five elementary schools in Taegu. For data analysis, frequency, percentage, Chi-square test, and ANOVA, Scheffe' test were employed. Major findings of this study are as follows; First, it was discovered that most mothers answered that the after school child care programs were indispensable, and the reason for that was that the programs are of great concern to children's education as well as beneficial to forming social relationships among peers. Furthermore, they preferred elementary school as the most suitable institute for after-school child care and education, and opted for the qualified after-school instructors as after-school teachers. Second, according to the demographic characteristics, it was observed that when their income and education levels were high, they felt a stronger need for after-school child care and education.
