Effects of Social Support on Self-Esteem & Locus of Control for Institutionalized children

This study investigated the effects of Social Support on Self-esteem & Locus of Control of institutionalized children. The subjects were 153 children 9-18 years of age. The results of Multiful Regression analysis revealed that 1) there were positive relationships between children's self-esteem and emotional support by parents and siblings. 2) Negative self-esteem was positively related to instrumental support by peer groups in school. 3) Locus of Control for children increased when instrumental support by volunteers was high or when the children had emotional support from their grandparents. From the results of this study, we conclude that the methods of support for institutionalized children must be considered in order to help the childem's adjustement.
