This study has been performed to investigate relationship between family life and indoor space organization of traditional dwelling units where older couples maintain their traditional farming lives. In this study, three types of basic structure were observed; the straight “ㅡ” form is for small peasantry families. A more advanced type, “ㄱ” form, is for medium size rural families with 5-6 household members. And the most advanced type, “ㅁ” form, is for extended land-owning families. Overall, it is observed that residents of the traditional farm-houses are exposed to high level of environmental pressures such as cracked housing structure, weak soil conditions of entrance path, absence of drainage, and dangers of fire or electric shock. However, it is also observed that the older residents are generally satisfied with their current dwelling units, manifesting a consistent subculture of the old-timers. Finally in this study, frequent visits of children, primary care and social support system are the key elements enhancing environmental quality of the traditional dwelling units.
