The purpose of this study was to examine how children's perceived parent bonding types were related to children's social competence. The subjects of this study were 291 mothers and their children of fifth and sixth grades in the three elementary schools located in T metropolitan city. Children as the subjects of this study were surveyed using Parental Bonding Instrument(PBI), and their mothers rated children's social competence using modified ISCS(Iowa Social Competence Scale). The statistics such as frequency, percentile, mean, pearson's correlation, one-way ANOVA and scheffe's test, regression analyses, and canonical correlation analyses were used for data analysis. The major findings of this study were as follows: 1. Children's social competence and the children's perceived parent bonding type were significantly different depending on children's sex, their parent's educational level, father's occupation type and monthly income. 2. There existed significant correlations between the children's social competence and parent bonding type perceived by children. 3. The canonical correlation analyses according to two variables-the parent bonding type and the children's social competence-showed that the best predictor of children's social competence among four factors of parent bonding type was 'maternal care'. Among the five children's social competence measures, the one predicted best by parent bonding type was 'capability'. This also showed that the parent bonding type variables accounted for about 14% of the variation in children's social competence.
