A Study on Caregiver's Stress with Demented Elderly

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between functional impairment of demented elderly and caregiving resources, caregiving stress. The subjects of this study were married daughters, daughters-in-law, and relatives who were caregiving to demented elderly. The 76 subjects were selected from the general hospital, specialized hospital for dementia, elementary, middle and high school, welfare center in the city of Taegu. The instruments of measurement were ADL/IADL Scale, MBPC, B I, Finance Condition Scale, Health Scale, Locus of Control Scale, FACESⅢ, FAD, and Social Support Scale. Factor analysis, Cronbach's a, Frequency, Correlation were conducted for the data analysis. The major findings of this study were as follows: First, cognitive, personality·emotional, and behavior impairment of demented elderly were positively correlated with caregiving stress, but daily living impairment were not correlated. Second, locus of control of caregiver was negatively correlated with caregiving stress, but financial and health condition were not correlated. Third, family cohesion was positively correlated with caregiving, but family adaptability and communication were not correlated. Fourth, in social support resources, there were no resources that correlated with caregiving stress.
