The purposes of this study were to investigate fathers' child rearing behaviors and young children's competencies according to the socio-demographic variables of young children and their family, and to examine effects of fathers' child rearing behaviors on their young children's competencies. The subjects were fathers and mothers of 649 young children aged six to seven attending the nursery schools located in T City. The data analysis employed statistical techniques such as frequency, percentile, one-way ANOVA and Scheffe´ test, correlation analysis, and regression analysis. The results showed that (1) The fathers' child rearing behaviors varied according to such variables as the level of education of fathers or mothers and parents' monthly income, and children's competencies varied according to their fathers' or mothers' occupation, level of education, and monthly income. (2) There were correlations between fathers' child rearing behaviors and both boys's total competencies and girls's. There were higher correlations between fathers and boys than between fathers and girls. (3) Fathers' child rearing behaviors had greater effects on boys' total competencies than on girls'. Specifically, boys' competencies were influenced by fathers' reasoning guidance, limit setting and intimacy, whereas girls' competencies were influenced by fathers' reasoning guidance and intimacy. Both boys' and girls' personalities were affected by fathers' child rearing behaviors. Boys' personalities were explained most by fathers' reasoning guidance and next by parental involvement, and girls' personalities most by reasoning guidance and then by intimacy.
