A Study on the Social Adjustment Process for Adults Discharged from the Orphanages

The purpose of this study is to provide the basic information on the follow-up service and support system for adults discharged from the orphanages in Korea. For this study, three adults who had lived in the orphanages for over five years and had been discharged for over ten years, were selected as the subject of study. They were interviewed by using in-depth interview method, which is one of the qualitative study methods. The result of this study was summarized as follows; The social adjustment process of adults discharged from the orphanages made a difference according to self-concept and reality cognition. The active type of social adjustment was characterized by positive self-concept and denial of reality, or social bias to orphan. The passive type of social adjustment was characterized by negative self- concept and acception of reality. Young Jun Lee, who has the active type of social adjustment, has processed the passive preparation period, the frustrating and wandering period, the reality cognition period and the active preparation period. He will process the psychological, social and economic stability period. Gi Young Kim, who is the passive type of social adjustment, has processed the anxiety period, the passive adjustment period and the economic stability period. Gung Hyo Park, who changed from the passive type of social adjustment to the active type of social adjustment, has processed the anxiety period, the passive adjustment period, the economic stability period and the positive self concept and preparation period. He will process the psychological, social and economic stability period.
