The purpose of this study was to examine the differences in the levels of adolescents' psychological maladjustment (depression and anxiety) across various family related variables. Family related variables were consisted of (a) parents' characteristics and (b) characteristics of family relationships (i.e., parents' child rearing attitude, parents' marital relationship, communication level between parents and adolescent children). The data were collected from 579 students from middle and high schools in Chonju by using self-administered questionnaire method. Results showed that there were significant differences in adolescents' psychological maladjustment across parents' age, mother's occupational status, and family's economic status perceived by adolescents. It was also found that the levels of family relationship characteristics were significantly negatively correlated with adolescents' anxiety and depression. Finally, results of multiple regression analyses showed that mother's attitude of child rearing and adolescent children's communication with their father were the most powerful variables affecting adolescents' psychological maladjustment.
