The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between maternal childrearing behavior as perceived by children and their emotional intelligence(EQ). The subjects were 1060 children in the 5th grade of elementary schools located in the cities of Seoul, Suwon, Taejon, and Taegu. Data were analyzed by frequency, percentile, mean, standard deviation, ANOVA, and Scheffe'-test, correlation analysis and canonical correlation analysis. Maternal warmth · acceptance showed the highest correlation with all four EQ factors, while rejection · restriction showed significant but much lower negative correlations with part of them, “other-regulation and self-expression” and “emotion perception”. Higher maternal warmth · acceptance groups showed higher EQ scores in all four EQ subareas than lower warmth · acceptance groups. When warmth · acceptance was high, the effects of maternal rejection · restriction tended to be negative, lowering the EQ scores. But when warmth · acceptance was low, rejection · restriction effects were positive, lifting the EQ scores. Positive effects of warmth · acceptance were much greater when rejection · restriction was low than when it was high. Warmth · acceptance factor of the three maternal childrearing factors was the strongest predictor of children's EQ, and “other-regulation and self-expression” factor of the four EQ factors was the best predicted EQ score among the four, with “self-regulation and expression” factor as the second.
