The Transition of Family Rites and Exploring Directions toward the New Century

The first purpose of this study is to identify the characteristics of the family ritual transition in order to comprehend the structural and symbolic process of Korean family life. And the second purpose is to explore the directions toward the new century in the rapidly industrializing Korea. It may be summarized as follows: I discovered the pervasive themes of family ritual transition : westernization, commercialism, socialization, feudalism, cultural lag and anomie. But contemporary rituals repoduce the forms and contents of traditional ones as family rituals. They continue to provide a place where participants reproduce the ideology of patriarchal family group. Therefore foreign elements exist in parallel with pre-existing traditional elements. Therefore, in contemporary rituals the family must restore its cultural meaning as a space for the interaction among family members, kins and neighbors. So culture movement to accede creative family ritual tradition by NGO is recommended.
