This study emerges out of a work about human service programs in parents' young children with disabilities. The major support for family centered approach is derived from acceptance of the concept that the handicapping conditions is as much a part of the child as the child is a part of the family and the family a part of a larger community; that is habilitating the handicapping condition alone is viewed as inadequate. Complete habilitation, directed toward improving the handicapped child's level of functioning in general, is considered possible only when the child as an individual is fully supported. This support is possible only when family members are assisted in developing comprehensive understanding of the disabled child. Further, supporters of a family-centered approach recognize the tremendous impact that the child's emotional state has on his or her total development. Therefore, work with the family is seen as mandatory if full development of the disabled child is to be facilitated.
