Home Observation for Measurement of the Environment(HOME) and preschool Children's Socio-Emotional Development by family Structure

This study examined differences and correlations with the HOME and preschool children's socio-emotional development by sex, nuclear family, and extended family. The subject were 169 four- to five-years old boys and girls and their mothers in Chonan city, Chungnam province. Instruments were the Home Observation for Measurement of the Environment (HOME), the Socio-Emotional Developmental Rating Scale, and a questionnaire for the home environmental variables. Data were analyzed by ANCOVA, partial correlation, and Cronbach a. The major findings were as follows; 1) there were higher score in nuclear family's HOME than extended family's except emotional climate. 2) The more play materials in nuclear family, the lower children's sense of stability in school. The higher emotional climate and need gratification and avoidance of restriction in extended family, the lower children's internal control, achievement motivation, and socio-emotional development total score.
