The Effects of the Family Violence on the Adolescents' Self-esteem and Academic Achievement

The purpose of this study was to examine the intensity of family violence adolescents experienced, their self-esteem and their academic achievement, to determine what factors affected family violence, self- esteem and academic achievement, and ultimately to be of use for more successful adolescent guidance by society, school and home. The subjects in this study were 406 students from six middle schools in the eastern region of South Jeolla province, who were selected inn consideration of gender, school year and residential area. For data analysis, SPSS Win program was utilized. The percentage, mean, standard deviation, frequency and Pearson's were calculated, one-way anova and regression analysis was conducted by demographic variables based on Dummy variable. The brief findings of this study were as below: First, as a result of investigating the intensity of family violence, self- esteem and academic achievement, the students investigated were more exposed to verbal family violence than physical and aggressive family violence. Second, school year, mother job, family circumstances, geographic region, father academic standard were identified as the factors that gave a significant effects on family violence. Third, the factors that significantly affected self-esteem was family violence, grades, school year and father academic standard. Fourth, family violence, school year exercised a significant influence on academic achievement.
