Uiam-byeolje is a specially celebrated ritual event to console the soul of Non Gea, who fell into the Namgang River with a Japanese general in Jinju Castle during the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592. It is particularly noteworthy in that it is a comprehensive artistic feast accompanied by music, song, and dance beyond the procedures and forms of noble Confucian rituals. This is not only an event that is unprecedented in the world, but it also has excellence in terms of artistry and cultural value. Uiam-byeolje was first founded by Jung Hyun-suk, the governor of Jinju in 1868, and has continued its name through several stops and resumption until now. In 1992, Sung Gye-ok newly restored it based on literature data such as the oral tradition of Choi Soon-yi, the first holder of Jinju sword dance from Jinju Gyobang, and the Gyobanggayo of Jung Hyun-suk. As a result, Uiam-byeolje began to conduct research on it with the attention of all walks of life. However, most of these studies focused on the loyalty of rice paddies and the incense accompanied by music, songs, and dances, and few attempts were made to grasp the intention and character of Jung Hyun-suk, the founder of Uiam-byeolje. However, most of these studies focused on Non Gea's loyalty and the ritual accompanied by music, song, and dance, and few attempts were made to grasp the intention and character from the perspective of Jung Hyun-suk, who founded Uiam-byeolje. Therefore, this study aims to supplement the deficiencies of previous studies by identifying the intention, scale, and characteristics of Uiam-byeolje from the perspective of the founder Jung Hyun-suk, based on existing related records and newly discovered literature data. Uiam-byeolje was a memorial activity voluntarily conducted by the private sector before it was recognized as an official memorial service in the Joseon Dynasty, and was passed down by pure private organizations, not by government offices or specific individuals. After that, it was equipped with a more complete framework in ritual procedures and music, song, dance, and entertainment by Jung Hyun-suk. Jung Hyun-suk's intention to create Uiam-byeolje was to pay tribute to Non Gea and righteous spirits who died for the country, to settle public sentiment in disarray, and to express the will to awaken through enlightenment during the modernization period. In addition, the scale of the memorial service was on a national scale above the level of the four godfathers, and its character can be said to be a festival of modern concepts as the Pung-reu Ceremony, which is centered on women. Nevertheless, Uiam-byeolje has not yet been designated as a national intangible cultural property as well as a world intangible cultural heritage. Therefore, in this paper, the research was conducted only on the size and characterization of Uiam-byeolje, but it is expected that Uiam-byeolje will be fully recognized at home and abroad as Korea's first regional festival and valuable cultural property through more rigorous historical evidence of its music, song, dance, and ritual archetype.
