마동석의 스타 페르소나 연구

A Study on Actor Don Lee's Star Persona

본고에서는 마동석이 주연을 맡아 큰 흥행을 기록한 영화의 특징을 세 시각에서 연구했다. 연구의 전제 조건은 마동석처럼 육체를 강조한 배우가 한국영화사에서 최고 배우가 된 것을 ‘마동석 현상’이라고 규정짓고, 그 현상을 세 시각으로 분석한 것이다. 세 시각은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 마동석이 기존의 한국영화사의 최고 남성 스타와 어떻게 구분되는지 살펴보았다. 둘째, 마동석처럼 강한 육체를 내세워 최고의 스타가 된 배우들이 영화계를 지배했던 1980년대 할리우드의 하드 바디 영화와 마동석이 주연을 맡은 영화를 비교해서 분석했다. 마지막으로, 마동석이 주연을 맡아 천만 영화에 등극한 <범죄도시> 시리즈를 기존의 천만영화와 비교해 보았다. 연구 결과는 이렇다. 첫째, 기존의 한국영화사에서 마동석과 같은 배우가 최고 스타가 된 것은 매우 이례적인 일이다. 둘째, 1980년대 할리우드의 하드 바디 영화와 마동석이 주연을 맡은 영화는 캐릭터 재현 방법, 적대자 설정, 이데올로기 등 많은 부분에서 동질성보다는 이질성을 더 많이 지니고 있다. 셋째, <범죄도시> 시리즈는 아버지, 가족주의, 눈물, 스펙터클을 강조하는 한국산 천만 영화보다는 권선징악, 해피엔딩, 슈퍼히어로를 강조하는 미국산 천만 영화에 더 가깝다. 이렇게 보면 현재 최고의 브랜드가 된 마동석 현상은 매우 이례적인 것이라고 하지 않을 수 없다.

In this paper, I study the characteristics of a hugely successful movie starring Don Lee, f rom three perspectives. This paper defines t he “Don Lee phenomenon”, the fact that an actor emphasizing the body like Don Lee became the best actor in Korean films, and analyzes this phenomenon from three perspectives. First, I examine how Don Lee was distinguished from the best male stars in traditional Korean films. Second, I compare the hard-body movies that dominated the movie industry of Hollywood in the 1980’s, when actors with strong bodies, similar to Don Lee, to movies starring Don Lee. Finally, I compare The Outlaws series, which starred Don Lee and reached ten million viewers, with the existing ten-million-viewer-mark movies. The study results are as follows. First, it is very unusual for an actor like Don Lee to become a top star in the existing Korean film history. Second, both the movies starring Don Lee and the hard-body films of Hollywood in the 1980’s share more differences than similarities in many areas: character representation, antagonist settings, and ideology. Third, The Outlaws series is even closer to American ten-million-viewer movies that emphasize poetic justice, happy endings, and super heroes, than Korean ten-millionviewer movies that emphasize fatherhood, familialism, tears, and spectacles. Therefore, the “Don Lee phenomenon”, which has become the top brand today, can be described as highly exceptional.
