Translation Strategy for Proper Nouns in K-content: Focused on the webtoon <A Killer Paradox>

본 논문에서는 웹툰에서 사용되는 어휘 중 고유명사의 번역 전략을 분석해 보고자 한다. 우선 서양과 동양에서 고유명사가 가지는 의미를 파악한 후 적합한 번역 전략을 찾고자 한다. 로마자로 일괄 번역하기에는 고유명사가 담고 있는 의미를 타겟 텍스트의 독자에게 전달하기는 한계가 있으므로 서양과 동양의 고유명사 번역에 관한 선행연구를 분석하여 작가의 의도를 효과적으로 전달하기 위한 방법을 확인하였다. 아직 웹툰이라는 분야가 타 분야에 비해 역사가 짧고 그 번역의 역사는 더욱 짧기 때문에 다양한 선행연구가 부족한 실정이다. 기존 문학 번역 연구에서 고유명사는 상호 연관성이 깊으므로 기존 문학에서 고유명사의 번역 전략을 선행연구로 삼아 웹툰을 기반으로 2차적저작물까지 세계적인 성공을 거둔 <살인자ㅇ난감> 속의 고유명사를 인물 지칭어, 사물지칭어, 지명과 단위 지칭어로 나누어 각각의 카테고리에서 어떤 번역전략이 사용되었는지 분류해 보았다.

This paper aims to analyze the translation strategies of proper nouns used in webtoons. First, we seek to understand the meanings of proper nouns in Western and Eastern culture, and then identify appropriate translation strategies. Since the Romanization of Korean may not effectively convey the meaning inherent in proper nouns to readers of the target text, we examined previous studies on the translation of proper nouns in Western and Eastern academia to find methods for effectively communicating the author’s intentions. Given the relatively short history of webtoons and their translations compared to other fields, there is a lack of diverse prior research. However, since proper nouns in literature often exhibit deep interconnections, we drew from previous studies on translation strategies for proper nouns in literature. We categorized the proper nouns utilized in <A Killer Paradox>, which is a globally successful TV series based on a K-webtoon, into those indicating people, those indicating objects, and those indicating places and units. Then we classified the translation strategies used in each category.
