The Representation and Meaning of “Han(恨)” in the Poetry of Lee Seung-ha: Focusing on Works Featuring Korean Traditional Dance, Music, and Shamanistic Rituals

본고는 이승하 시인의 시에 수용된 우리 고유의 전통춤, 민요와 소리, 굿에 나타난 한의 표상과 의미를 규명하기 위해 시도되었다. 이를 요약 제시하면 아래와 같다. 첫째, 전통 민속춤의 경우 하층민의 대사회적 갈등 극복을 위한 전통춤의 테두리 안에 하층민의 비애와 한으로 표출된 농촌의 실상을 고찰하였다. 한풀이에 의한 대 사회적 비판의식과 갈등 해소의 양상은, 억눌린 서민들의 한과 상층사회에 대한 저항정신과 비판의식, 해학과 풍자적인 주 내용이, 신명을 일으키는 주요 수단인 춤을 통해 긍정적으로 극복하는 민속춤의 정신적 가치를 확인할 수 있었다. 둘째, 음악(민요와 광대 및 악기 소리)의 경우, 신명 나는 소리 한 판을 통해 기층민의 애환과 소리꾼의 한이 표출된 양상과 암울한 식민지 시대에 비운의 생을 마감한 추모시를 통해, 비극의 역사를 몸소 체험한 응어리진 비애의 한이 서린 역사의 교훈을 확인할 수 있었다. 셋째, 굿의 경우 생의 허무와 현세의 고통을 떨쳐내는 제의의 한풀이 안에, 굿이라는 제의 과정을 통해 긍정적인 한풀이의 문학으로 승화되는 점과 잊혀져 가는 우리 기층문화와 전통문화에 대한 계승 의지를 확인할 수 있었다.

This study attempts to elucidate the representation and meaning of “Han” as depicted in the traditional Korean dance, folk songs and music, and shamanistic rituals incorporated in the poetry of Lee Seung-ha. A summary of the findings is as follows: Firstly, in the case of traditional folk dance, the study examines the rural reality expressed through the sorrow and “Han” of the lower class within the framework of traditional dances aimed at overcoming societal conflicts. The process of resolving conflicts and expressing critical consciousness towards society through “Han-puri” (the release of “Han”) highlights the resistance spirit, critical consciousness towards the upper class, humor, and satire of the oppressed common people. This confirms the spiritual value of folk dance as a means of evoking joy and positively overcoming hardships. Secondly, regarding music (folk songs, performances by minstrels, and instrumental sounds), the study explores the expression of the joys and sorrows of the lower class and the “Han” of performers through exuberant musical performances. It also reflects on the historical lessons imbued with the bitter sorrow experienced during the tragic colonial period through elegies mourning those who met unfortunate ends. Thirdly, in the context of shamanistic rituals, the study identifies the literary sublimation of positive “Han-puri” through the ritualistic process of exorcising the futility of life and the suffering of the present world. It also underscores the determination to preserve and inherit our fading grassroots and traditional culture through these rituals.
