허응당보우 대사의 생애와 사상 연구

A study on the life and thoughts of Great monk Heo Eungdang bou

이 연구는 조선 중기 허응당 보우대사의 생애를 살펴보고 그의 사상을 강화하기 위한 활동을 현대 사회에 적용시킬 수 있는 방안을 찾기 위한 목적을 가진 연구이다. 연구의 완성을 위하여 허응당 보우와 관련된 자료와 선행연구 등을 이용하여 문헌연구를 통해 연구의 목적을 달성하고자 하였다. 조선 중기는 척불의 정도가 매우 강화되던 시기로 거치면서 불교는 풍전등화와 같은 멸절의 위기에 처해 있었다. 이 시기 등장한 허응당 보우 대사는 조선 불교가 외형적으로는 존속했지만, 그 본질이 많이훼손되었다고 보고, 불교의 본질을 회복하고자 노력하였으며, 불교의 이론적 측면과 실천적 측면을 균형있게 발전시키고자 선교일치(禪敎一致)를 강조하였다. 그리고, 불교가 단순히 개인의 수행에 그치는 것이아니라, 사회적 역할을 수행해야 한다고 보고 사회적 책임과 왕실과의 관계를 강조하였다.

This study aims to find ways to strengthen the ideology of great monk Heo Eung-dang Bou in modern society by looking at the life of great monk Heo Eung-dang Bou in the mid-Joseon Dynasty and examining his activities to strengthen his ideology. To complete the study, the purpose of the study was achieved through literature research using data and previous studies related to great monk Heo Eung-dang Bou. The mid-Joseon Dynasty was a time when the degree of suppression of Buddhism was greatly intensified, and Buddhism was on the verge of extinction. Master great monk Heo Eung-dang Bou appeared during this period, believed that Buddhism in Joseon still existed on the outside, but its essence had been greatly damaged, so he tried to restore the essence of Buddhism and developed the theoretical and practical aspects of Buddhism in a balanced manner. Emphasis was placed on Zen Buddhism. In addition, he believed that Buddhism was not simply limited to individual practice, but had to play a social role, and emphasized social responsibility and relationships with the royal family.
