신약 외경 「부활에 대한 논고」(NHC 1,4)는 2세기 교회가 목격한 부활 논쟁의 단면을 보여준다. 이 논고는 영적인 부활과 육신의 부활을 모두 거론한다는 점에서 특별하다. 그러나 「부활 논고」가 말하는 육신의 부활은 교부들이 말하는 물질적 육신의 부활과 차이가 난다. 교부들은 부활한 육신과 지상의 육신의 연속성을 강조하면서 부활한 육신의 물질성을 부각시킨다. 「부활 논고」에서는 부활한 육신의 물질성이 완전히 부정된다. 부활한 육신은 지상의 흙으로 된 지체가 아니라 영적인 육신임이 암시된다. 이는 영적인 부활이 혼적 육신과 육적 육신, 또는 혼적 부활과 육적 부활을 모두 삼켜버린다는 언명에 함축되어 있다. 혼적이거나 육적인 요소는 영적 부활에 삼켜지고 용해된다는 것이다. 이 논고가 말하는 육신의 부활이 물질적 육신의 부활이 아니라는 것은 2세기 교부들의 글이나 「사도들의 편지」와 비교할 때 더욱 선명해진다. 결론적으로, 「부활 논고」는 육신의 부활을 내세우기는 하지만 그것은 교부들이 말하는 육신의 부활과 전혀 다르다. 「부활 논고」가 말하는 육신의 부활은 물질적 육신의 부활이 아니라 영적 육신의 부활이다. 물질적 육신은 부활한 실존에 필요치 않다는 것이다. 따라서 「부활 논고」가 내세우는 육신의 부활은 사실상 영적인 부활에 가깝다. 이 논고 저자가 어떤 식으로든 ‘육신’을 부활에 참여시킴으로써, 부활에서 육신을 완전히 배제한 다른 영지주의자들과 거리를 두려고 한 것 같다.

This treatise is unique and special in that it discusses both spiritual and bodily resurrection. However, the resurrection of the flesh that this Treatise speaks of is different from the resurrection of the material flesh spoken of by the Church Fathers. They emphasize the continuity of the resurrected flesh with the earthly flesh, highlighting the materiality of the resurrected flesh. In this Treatise, the materiality of the resurrected flesh is completely denied. It says that the resurrected flesh is not an earthly body, but a spiritual body. In conclusion, while this Treatise does assert the resurrection of the flesh, it is not the same as the resurrection spoken of by the Church Fathers. The resurrection of the flesh in this Treatise is not the resurrection of the material flesh, but the resurrection of the spiritual flesh. It means that the material flesh is not necessary for a resurrected being. Therefore, the resurrection of the flesh in this Treatise can actually be said to be a spiritual resurrection. By including the “flesh” in the resurrection in some way, it seems that the author of this Treatise was trying to distance himself from other Gnostics who excluded the flesh from the resurrection altogether.
