돈계 허후는 아직까지 학계에 알려지지 않은 인물이다. 그가 원주를 주된 생활 공간으로 삼았고, 퇴계의 주리론을 학문의 중심에 둔 조선 중기 남인 계열의 학자로 예학에 상당히 밝았으며, 스스로를 임금과 국가에 대해 책임이 있는 사대부이자 관료로 여겼다는 정도를 확인할 수 있을 뿐이다. 이런 한계는 허후의 문학적 역량 파악에도 동일하게 작용한다. 현재 허후의 문학적 역량을 살펴볼 수 있는 자료는 26수의 시가 전부이다. 하지만 허후의 시는 문학적 성과를 추구하는 시가 아니라 삶의 진실을 담고자 하는 시로, 수양된 내면세계를 보여준다는 특징을 지닌다. 그렇기 때문에 허후의 시는 특별한 기교 없이도 깊은 여운을 전해준다. 이런 문학적 성과를 보이는 허후에 접근하기 위해서는 더 많은 허후의 작품을 찾으면서 동시에 현재 전하는 허후의 전체 작품에 한층 더 깊이 있게 다가가야 하고, 허후와 허후의 작품을 다양한 관계망 속에서 검토해야 한다.

However, Heo Hu's poetry is not a poem that seeks literary achievements, but a poem that seeks to contain the truth of life, and is characterized by showing a cultivated inner world. That's why Heo Hu's poems convey a deep lingering feeling without any special skills.
